What is Lock Time

LockTime is a field in Bitcoin transactions used to set when a transaction can be added to the blockchain. By specifying a time point or block height, it ensures that the transaction cannot be confirmed until the condition is met. The LockTime field is located at the end of the transaction data structure and is represented using 4 bytes.

Functions of Lock Time

Introduced by BIP 68, Relative LockTime allows a transaction input to set a relative time lock, requiring the transaction to wait for a certain time or number of blocks after the previous transaction is confirmed. Relative LockTime enables more complex payment schemes and smart contracts.

Implementation of Lock Time

1. Setting LockTime

LockTime can be set by assigning a value to the transaction's LockTime field. LockTime can be set as a specific UNIX timestamp (in seconds) or a block height:

  • Values less than 500,000,000 represent block heights.

  • Values equal to or greater than 500,000,000 represent UNIX timestamps.

2. Validating LockTime

During transaction validation, nodes check if the current block height or network time meets the LockTime condition. The transaction will only be confirmed and added to a block if the condition is met.
